Tyler Thompson and Predator Tyres Take on Cape York Without a Problem

A trip to Cape York pushed Tyler Thompson’s build, and its Predator Tyres, through the kind of deep crossings, rough tracks, and remote conditions that turn a trip into a true test.

Cape York is the kind of trip that builds its own reputation. You can read the track guides, watch the videos, or scroll through recovery posts in Facebook groups, but it still won’t prepare you for what the Old Telegraph Track actually throws at you. It’s long. It’s remote. That’s what makes Cape York a good benchmark. If something makes it through without becoming a problem, that probably tells you most of what you need to know.

Tyler Thompson is one of the most well-known names in Australia’s 4WD content scene. His YouTube channel has grown a loyal following for one simple reason: it’s honest. The trips are real, the gear gets used properly, and when something breaks, it doesn’t get edited out. His builds are hands-on, his family is often in the passenger seat, and his footage shows what it’s actually like to tour remote Australia in a setup you built yourself.

Tyler’s GQ Patrol led most of the way in Cape York, running the Predator X-MT tyres for the entire trip. When we asked how the conditions were when he went, he said,

“The terrain across the Cape was a mix – everything from rocky river crossings and corrugations to soft sand and lots of mud. The tyres handled it all incredibly well. They were aired down where needed, held traction across soft, washed-out sections, and tracked steadily through water crossings. No balancing issues. No sidewall cuts. No punctures, even on the sharper rock sections north of Sam’s and Logan’s.”

Cape York like many remote locations makes confidence in the gear you are using matter, and we asked Tyler if he’d run them again, “absolutely. They’ve been the best tyres we’ve ever used.”

People spend years talking about doing Cape York, and by the time you get there, it’s no place for trial runs, you want gear that’s already proven itself. So, we asked the question you are all probably wondering, would he recommend Predator Tyres?

“If a mate asked about running Predators for a big trip, I’d say do it. We’ve had zero issues, they performed brilliantly, and we’ll definitely keep using them on future trips. Can’t recommend them enough. We’ve even had family members purchase them since seeing how well they go with us and what we put them through!”
